Future Fantasteek! brings together a trichotomy of investigation. art-zines and independent publishing. artist as social commentator and drawing as a means of immediate visual communication. The series explores obdurate boundaries between journalism and authorial illustration using satire to reflect notions of ‘Britishness’. The series can be read as a sequence, from just prior to the ‘credit crunch’ through to the ‘age of austerity’. The series is independently published as a limited edition art-zine, with two issues per year. The approach is experimental, incremental and reflective focussing on both the microcosm and macrocosm of living in the UK. Visual humour is developed throughout as a vehicle for change, combining techniques such as pastiché, parody and socratic irony. Typography and images are juxtaposed to create new narrative possibilities. Language is explored using different ‘voices’ such as anecdotal, colloquial or profane. This text is then translated into drawn commentaries on etiquette, politics and advertising. The ‘anxiety of the individual’ is a running theme throughout the series with many reoccurring protagonists and antagonists soliloquizing their notions of ‘Das Unheimliche’. The series also explores changing technologies with regard to notions of ‘the book’ with online versions of Future Fantasteek! available via a blog and online PDF reader (issuu and .swf).

Oversized ‘promises’ in the form of real estate advertisements are promoting the new city along the lines of global real estate and living standards. ‘The perfect union to all you desire’ and ‘We believe luxury is best served in small quantities’ first seen along Varthur Road in Whitefield, Bangalore, caught my attention. The second one leaves a particularly ironic, tangy, protestant-flavoured impression, seen from the German point of view.
Questions emerged about the Indian caste system, the sense of community, modesty and personal goals.
The design of this urbanity also reminds me of earlier journeys to the United Arab Emirates and Shanghai. The new urbanity becomes exchangeable, custom-tailored and its ‘ultra-luxurious villas’ accessible ‘for the chosen few’ of the Pepsi Generation.

Domino Pyttels vielseitige künstlerische Praxis setzt Hybridwesen, halb Mensch, halb Tier in den Mittelpunkt. Zwischen SciFi und Fetischobjekt bewegen sich ihre Figuren – etwa Sad Leopard, oder ihr Alter Ego Ape Girl – durch eine Narration von Rausch, Emotion, Popkultur und Verfremdung. Lange hat sich Pyttel mit der inhaltlichen Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Tier beschäftigt und eine Art Enthierarchisierung der Arten performt. Ihre jüngsten Videos, Objekte, Collagen und Perfomance-Installationen fokussieren auf das Animalische im Menschen, dessen Gefühls- oder Sinneszustände und gesellschaftliche Entfremdung. Die entstehenden, surrealen Parallelwelten und sphärisch anmutenden Settings sind Tragikkomödien, humorvoll, aber auch immer ernsthaft, wahr und ästhetisch. Pyttel ist nicht an der Persiflage eines materialistischen oder emotionsüberladenen Zeitgeists interessiert, sondern an der Zustandsbeschreibung der verschiedenen menschlichen (Lebens-)Realitäten. Den Ausstellungsraum transformiert Pyttel in einen Zustand zwischen geballtem Liebeskummer und kultischer Pop-Verehrung. Zur Eröffnung bevölkern neben Video, Collagen, Fotografien, Skulpturen auch performative „living skulptures“ diese emotional aufgeladene Erzählwelt, in die die ZuschauerInnen wie von den sehnsüchtigen Liedern der Sirenen hineingezogen werden.

Lange hat sich Pyttel mit der inhaltlichen Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Tier beschäftigt und eine Art Enthierarchisierung der Arten performt. Ihre jüngsten Videos, Objekte, Collagen und Perfomance-Installationen fokussieren auf das Animalische im Menschen, dessen Gefühls- oder Sinneszustände und gesellschaftliche Entfremdung. Die entstehenden, surrealen Parallelwelten und sphärisch anmutenden Settings sind Tragikkomödien, humorvoll, aber auch immer ernsthaft, wahr und ästhetisch. Pyttel ist nicht an der Persiflage eines materialistischen oder emotionsüberladenen Zeitgeists interessiert, sondern an der Zustandsbeschreibung der verschiedenen menschlichen (Lebens-)Realitäten. Den Ausstellungsraum transformiert Pyttel in einen Zustand zwischen geballtem Liebeskummer und kultischer Pop-Verehrung. Zur Eröffnung bevölkern neben Video, Collagen, Fotografien, Skulpturen auch performative „living skulptures“ diese emotional aufgeladene Erzählwelt, in die die ZuschauerInnen wie von den sehnsüchtigen Liedern der Sirenen hineingezogen werden.

Photographs of couples in profile before a wide coniferous landscape in three planes: landscape representing the power of vital force, of immortality.
Couples of a certain age, people barely seen socially, but who have not stopped living life fully and whose close relation is photographed in the outing dances of their area. The photographs give visibility to people that, for a certain time, have lacked such visibility. This series, at the same time, documents the cultural diversity that exists between different cities and countries: Guadalajara, Spain; Philadelphia, USA; Pirkanmaa, Finland and Leyte, Philippines. This project would like to honor those that live life fully, those people that are reaching a mature age, but remain active.

Das Museum Villa Stuck präsentiert zum ersten Mal in München die Arbeiten des in Taiwan geborenen Künstlers Lee Mingwei (*1964), der in Paris und New York lebt und arbeitet. Zu sehen sind Installationen und Performances der letzten 30 Jahre, mit denen der Künstler Rituale des Schenkens und Beschenktwerdens in den Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit stellt – zentral ist dabei die aktive Einbindung des Publikums. Lee Mingwei stellt die Kunst als immaterielles und transformatives Geschenk dar. Die Darbietung von Liedern, Gesprächen und kontemplativen Momenten regt die Besucher*innen zur Mitwirkung an. Nicht zuletzt eröffnet Lees künstlerische Praxis damit Möglichkeiten einer Verarbeitung der sozialen Folgen der Pandemie.
LEE MINGWEI: 禮 Li, Geschenke und Rituale feiert das Schenken und das Empfangen von Zeit und Hingabe. Einer der wichtigsten Einflüsse für Lee Mingwei ist das konfuzianische Prinzip Li (禮). Dieser Begriff umfasst Gedanken zu Riten, Ritualen, Geschenken und Anstandsregeln. Darauf aufbauend untersucht die Ausstellung Gesten der Gastfreundschaft und Rituale des Gebens und Nehmens. ...
Für drei Projekte startete die Villa Stuck im Vorfeld Aufrufe zur Beteiligung an Interessierte. Für Fabric of Memory suchte Lee nach textilen Erinnerungsstücken und für The Mending Project nach Personen, die vor Ort Kleidung flicken und dabei Gespräche mit den Besucher*innen führen. The Living Room lädt Münchner*innen dazu ein, ihre persönlichen Sammlungen im Rahmen der Ausstellung zu zeigen.
