This publication documents the monumental collaborative work which Liam Gillick and Lawrence Weiner produced for the Antwerp museum of contemporary art MuHKA in the spring of 2011. Tellingly titled A Syntax of Dependency:, the project could be viewed as the outcome of a twenty-year dialogue between artists, artistic practices, generations. This giant floor piece, consisting of an abstract linoleum pattern containing an array of phrases, took up the museum's entire first floor - its site-specifity meaning that the end of the exhibition also entailed the work's irreversible destruction. This photo novella - complete with fragments of a conversation between both artists and a short text by exhibition curator Dieter Roelstraete - captures the work in its unique desolate splendor

Accounted For, 2006 collects 54 train receipts in order to document, in chronological order, the trips a railway traveller took in 2006. The blue-and-white pattern found on Belgian Railways tickets is printed offset over photocopies of one year’s worth of travel expenses (the individual receipts record the date and destination of each trip), thus giving the impression of continuous movement. Accounted For, 2006 was printed in downtown Lima, Peru in 2009, some three years after the train trips actually took place.

James Merle Thomas und Meghan O´Hara zeigen in der Ausstellung "As with all bright constellations" vom 23.06.-18.10.2016 in der Lothringer13 Halle, vielfältiges Dokumentationsmaterial aus dem "Tektite Revisited Projekt"
Das Projekts wurde zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre von der General Electric Corporation, der US Navy und der NASA vor der Küste der amerikanischen Virgin Islands durchgeführt. Nach der ersten Reise zum Mond, wollte man menschliches Verhalten in Raumkapseln erforschen. Dazu wurde eine kostengünstige Variante gewählt, indem eine Forschungsstation auf dem Meeresgrund installiert wurde. Die "Aquanauten" - Teilnehmer des Projekts - wurden rund um die Uhr überwacht.
Das gezeigte Dokumentationsmaterial in der Ausstellung erstreckt sich über Film, Fotografie und Illustration. Ebenfalls zu sehen ist das "Test Pattern for Underwater Photography", welches der Fotograf Flip Schulke entwickelt hat, um die Unterwasserfototechnik zu testen.

I had been in Cuba for almost a year studying in the Behavior Art School. One night, when my parents and I were having dinner at a tourist restaurant during one of their visits, I observed that most of the tables were occupied by couples made up of middle-aged tourists and Cuban girls. At the time (2008) the only option Cubans had to leave the country legally was to make a tourist man or woman fall in love with them and marry him or her. Love had become a kind of passport to freedom—or to the illusion of freedom, and winning someone’s heart and seducing them allowed Cubans to dream with a new life, a better—or different—life, regardless of it being real or unreal. That very day I decided to marry a Cuban man in order to understand and draw attention to what was happening in the country, that exchange of interests, that market of dreams, sex and company. My plan was to follow the same pattern. I would marry a Cuban man; I would give him the means to obtain the coveted papers and permits to leave the country in exchange of being able to use him in a work of art. I would use love to fool Cuban and Spanish bureaucracy. This is how the project Humanitarian Help was born. With that in mind, I organised a kind of public open call in which I offered to marry the Cuban man who wrote me “the most beautiful love letter in the world”, offering also to pay for the wedding expenses, his ticket to Spain and all the formalities to obtain Spanish nationality. This offer was aimed at those Cuban men who were interested in emigrating. A jury made up of three Cuban prostitutes would pick the winning letter and, therefore, my future husband. Mirroring the interested conditions that are usually applied in humanitarian aid, I required in the terms that the selected man be at my disposal for any request for the duration of the marriage. Once he acquired the Spanish citizenship, we divorced in accordance with the agreed terms and conditions. In the event that the work is sold, the profits will be shared out in equal parts.

BLACK MELODY ist ein Ausstellungskonzept und spielt mit der Vergänglichkeit von ortsspezifischen Installationen. Vier Begriffe: black-rose, black-cat, black-bird und black-mail als Zeichnungen auf leichten Holztafeln realisiert, werden jeweils in räumlich angepasste Wandmalereien integriert und für jede neue Inszenierung auch neu gezeichnet. Die direkt auf die Wand gemalten Pattern, ryhtmische Farbklänge und Muster sind einmalig für den jeweiligen Ort realisiert und werden wieder übermalt. Die Holztafeln, mit den immer wieder gleichen Zeichnungen, bleiben als Werkgruppe erhalten.

... Karel Martens ist ein Tausendsassa und hat überall seine Finger im Spiel. Er ist Künstler, Typograf, Grafikdesigner, er stellt Bücher her und ist in der Lehre tätig. Er war Mitbegründer einer Schule und hat eine Vielzahl von Menschen beeinflusst.
Deshalb wird Motion entsprechend vielschichtig und rhizomatisch sein – sie besteht aus einer auf seiner Praxis fußenden Ausstellung seiner Arbeit, die sich sowohl über das Treppenhaus und drei Ausstellungsräume erstrecken wird als auch darüber hinaus getragen wird durch eine Reihe von diskursiven Veranstaltungen in München, Amsterdam, Paris, Vilnius und New York sowie einer dazu erscheinenden Publikation (in Zusammenarbeit mit Roma Publications, Amsterdam). Alles in allem wird Motion einen vielfältigen Blick auf ein ausgedehntes Schaffen eröffnen und einen Wegweiser durch sein Werk liefern. Und während Motion einen Bogen über 50 Jahre der interdisziplinären Aktivitäten des Künstlers spannt, wird die Ausstellung doch fest in der Gegenwart (und Zukunft) verankert sein. ...
... Mit anderen Worten, Motion ist nicht dazu gedacht, Martens‘ Arbeitsweise auszustellen, sondern vielmehr als Verkörperung seiner Methode.
