    "Gasworks Yaoi" is the first solo exhibition by Spanish artist Francesc Ruiz in London. The show is the culmination of Ruiz's research in the local area, conducted during his residency at Gasworks. Inspired by the longstanding gay establishments in Vauxhall, the artist has created a semi-fictional narrative that overemphasises the clichés around sexuality and lifestyle in the area.
    For "Gasworks Yaoi", Ruiz will transform the front of the gallery into a bookshop specialising in yaoi comic books. Originating in Japan, this genre (translated as 'boys love') depicts male homoerotic narratives. However, unlike male-oriented gay erotica, yaoi comic books are both produced and consumed by women.
    The yaoi comics, featured in Ruiz's bookshop at Gasworks are allegedly produced by female amateur illustrators who portray the encounters of a group of men whose nightlives revolve around Vauxhall's sprawling gay club and bar scene. By adopting the yaoi comic format and resorting to female authorship, Ruiz distances himself from the stories and characters he depicts, allowing for the imagination to run wild, indulging in stereotypes and idealised situations. Through the comics' humour and distortion of reality Ruiz gives himself license to explore a specific subculture and the way it sits within the wider fabric of the neighbourhood.
    Turned into a specialised comic bookshop for women, Gasworks' space becomes an environment where sexuality, local context and its social dynamics are fictionalised and packaged into a product for consumption.

    He was dancing steadily. He could see the backs of people’s heads moving in the darkness and was aware of the shifting spaces between their bodies. He did not register the music except as a sort of vibration. He felt as if he was dancing in perfect silence. He saw the already dim room growing ever darker around him. He became less conscious of his surroundings and more aware of himself. His introspection grew but his body was now moving automatically, softly cycling through a short loop of set motions. He noticed dust under his feet, and soon the realisation reached him that he was slowly wearing a shallow hole in the wooden floor. His body was locked in an efficient cycle. Before too long he was six inches below floor level, his head parallel with some of the shorter dancers. Yet he could not stop. Gradually he sank deeper into the ground until his face was level with people’s waists. No one noticed, below the eye level of the crowd, he was almost invisible. Presently his eyes came level with the soles of dancing shoes. He could see shards of coloured light flashing through a forest of legs casting jagged shapes across the floor. There were points where soft reflected light shone through looming figures like sunlight into a clearing. Eventually he was entirely submerged. He could look up through the hole and see foreshortened bodies moving above him oblivious to his plight. Still his feet moved, wearing away damp, pungent earth. The vibrations from the music lessened until the dull thump of the kick drum was all that he could feel. When it stopped he realised he too was still, and looking up he saw the sphere of light was gone.

  • Christophoros Kyriakides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1949. He was an architecture draughtsman and considered himself an inventor. In 1988 he self-published “Six Continents Stars Compass”, ‘an entertaining and educational’ board game. He considered the game inventive, recreative and formative for all ages and intended its global distribution. The game received no recognition from the public and now only a few copies exist.
    In the board game, Kyriakides draws a journey with impossible objects, invented maps, landscapes and anagrammatic poetry with mathematical diagrams. One comes across an abstracted reflection of 80s locality, world politics, obsession with the American dream, an isolated emotional darkness but also a universal landscape. A chance encounter of Marina Xenofontos with this game catalysed a strong fascination that led to the uncovering of his archive. This publication, a part of Xenofontos’ practice-based research, brings to the fore the rich universe of Kyriakides’ personal symbolism that shecreatively harnesses as a means of an alternative, atypical handling and systematisation of themes and issues that she finds affinities with.

  • As a possible – perhaps – reaction to all those who love the comfort and permanence of the status of their position, I have gathered a series of unusual chairs, personas that are characterised by a sensitive nervous system. I believe their creators foresaw for the visitor not to forget and become complacent while seated, as would someone when sitting on any chair and shortly thereafter forgetting the very action of sitting. The visitor is called upon to reflect on the condition that the chair’s form presents them with. I would not argue that they are pleasant or comfortable to sit on, seeing as their construction does not allow the sitter to acquaint himself immediately. Note that the chair’s presence is not always obvious but it is implied, as for example in Mario Carbone’s photograph Donna in Osteria 1956. Different in style, they all meet in this exhibition to converse.

  • The Office gallery is delighted to present the most recent work from the controversial, British artist/taxidermist Polly Morgan titled ‘FOUNDATIONS AND REMAINS’. Since 2005 the London based artist has managed to create a visual language of her own through the use of animals as raw materials of her work and their placement as protagonists in scenes that are unnatural to them.
    Though her peculiar work, she is forcing us to look at the animals used, as if for the first time, free from previous associations, deliberately challenging the fragile relationship between humans and animals.
    The major work of the exhibition titled ‘FOUNDATIONS/REMAINS’ has been made using 2428 cast crow femurs that are each painted by hand. The glue used is identical in colour to the fat present in the joints of bones, so it bears the same colour and consistency of a real animal skeleton. This work is inspired by Charnel Houses (Ossuaries) which were decorative buildings essentially used to pile high skeletons in order to save space. The structure was built using plans from Sol Lewitt's spiral tower “Untitled” 1989.

  • The Office gallery presents new works by the Austrian artist Bernhard Hosa in his exhibition Hyperkinesia, starting on June 30, 2016.
    Hosa's photo collages, objects and installations are reduced, almost minimalist in appearance and usually based on concrete themes. His starting point is the tension between the individual and a normative society. Based on an engagement with the biological view of the inside and of the outside, on man as an object of scientific study and on the measurement of the human body, he develops his own formal language on the interface between conceptual art and an aesthetic approach. Hosa deconstructs his reflections with artistic strategies such as reproduction, variation or sequence, and practices such as dissection and the creation of new compositions. The resulting series of collages or objects and stringent arrangements of the space adopt the character of the contents of his research.

  • Bast Fooks was one of my new years resolutions for 2016. I haven’t given up smoking yet, but I did end up spending my new years eve in, printing and sewing the first Bast Fook issue. There and then I had decided that it would be a project in 12 parts and that I would produce a book for each month of 2016. Each Bast Fook is a repository of ideas (in the form of notes, thoughts, readings and misreadings, assumptions, aphorisms, contemplations, stories, lists, observations and lost projects). Bast Fooks have evolved into a platform through which, I can organise - in a pretty disorganised way-ideas as they happen and material produced in different ways, under different circumstances, at different places and times and sometimes by totally different versions of myself.   • In the context of a continuous and persistent spiritual quest in the field of Greek art and its history, the artist Christos Bokoros appears —through simple themes and earthy, warm materials— to win an important battle. He has silently found a subtle and significant way of stripping bare certain symbols—his own ‘signs’: a way of isolating those symbols from anything unnecessary and superfluous, and of drawing the community’s attention to them by revealing them to be purified, resurrectional and full of fire.

  • Deepti Barth presents TRANSGRESSION at the home of the Cyprus Visual Artists Association (24.10.13–16.11.13), the Phytorio, located within the Nicosia Municipal Gardens and at the Office gallery, just a few metres from the Buffer Zone. The work explores issues of restriction.
    The material was shot and filmed in November of 2012 at the Nicosia International Airport. The lens follows the movement of a paraplegic Greek-Cypriot through this location: an area within the Buffer Zone controlled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus. Photographs and video narrate the progression of the protagonist in a fragmented, often non-linear way, beginning on the runway, continuing on the uphill ramp of the terminal building. The paraplegic breaks though barbed wire and a locked entrance door, advancing through the corridors of the main building to reach what used to be a departure lounge – transgressing a decision that was taken by the UNFICYP six months before filming, to strictly prohibit access to the terminal building “for safety reasons” (sic).

    Mit der Ausstellung Objekt-Magazine präsentiert die Galerie Kunsttempel erstmals 39 herausragende Titel mit über 100 Ausgaben von Objekt-Zeitschriften, die von 1965–2016 publiziert wurden. Die Ausstellung gibt mit dieser Bandbreite an Titeln aus dreizehn unterschiedlichen Ländern (Australien, Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Japan, Niederlande, Österreich, Polen, Schweiz, Spanien, USA, Zypern) einen repräsentativen Überblick über diese Sonderform künstlerischen Verlegens. Einige der ausgestellten Magazine sind raumgreifend und regelrechte Skulpturen, andere zeigen sich in ungewöhnlichen Verpackungen wie Dosen, Mützen, Kleidungsstücken oder Flaschen. Es werden auch Magazine gezeigt, die noch dem herkömmlichen Zeitschriftenformat ähneln, jedoch sind auch diese mit Materialien durchsetzt und zeigen oftmals auf dem Cover applizierte Gegenstände. Die ausgestellten Objekte lassen sich den Kunstrichtungen Mail Art, Neo-Dada, Post-Fluxus und neueren Stilrichtungen zuordnen.
