In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist Ed Ruscha created a series of small photo-conceptual artist’s books, among them Twentysix Gas Stations, Various Small Fires, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Real Estate Opportunities, and A Few Palm Trees. Featuring mundane subjects photographed prosaically, with idiosyncratically deadpan titles, these “small books” were sought after, collected, and loved by Ruscha’s fans and fellow artists. Over the past thirty years, close to 100 other small books that appropriated or paid homage to Ruscha’s have appeared throughout the world. This book collects ninety-one of these projects, showcasing the cover and sample layouts from each along with a description of the work. It also includes selections from Ruscha’s books and an appendix listing all known Ruscha book tributes.

In the Fall of 2018, the Small Walker Press invited poet Adam Dickinson and artist Lorène Bourgeois to walk through a former landfill (1976-2001), the Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site. Located on the Niagara Escarpment, overlooking the City of St. Catharines, Ontario, it functions today as a public recreation area.

His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. Since the 1985 founding of his handpress, which Gunnar A. Kaldewey set up in Poestenkill, in upstate New York, over sixty unique artist books have been produced in cooperation with artists such as Jonathan Lasker, Mischa Kuball, or Richard Tuttle. Among the authors are famous names such as Samuel Beckett, Paul Celan, Marguerite Duras, and James Joyce. Published in small limited editions, the books are produced according to the highest level of craftsmanship. Kaldewey does the typesetting and prints the books, sometimes making the paper himself, too. The bookbinding is done by renowned workshops such as Christian Zwang's in Hamburg, or Jean de Gonet's in Paris.

Geburtstag in Venedig voraussah. Ihm zu Ehren präsentiert das Zentrum für Künstlerpublikationen, kuratiert von Guy Schraenen, Künstlerpublikationen von Cavellini aus den Beständen des Archive for Small Press & Communication.

Dieses internationale Seminar dreht sich um den Begriff und die Praxis dessen, was der ungarische Künstler György Galántai "aktive Archive" nennt. Als kulturelle Untergrundinstitutionen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren entstanden, übernahmen die aktiven Archive nicht nur die passive Rolle, die Erinnerung an künstlerische Praktiken zu bewahren, die für das offizielle Kunstsystem unsichtbar waren, sondern sie aktivierten diese Praktiken, speisten sie und gaben ihnen Rückmeldungen, indem sie als Knotenpunkte oder Kreuzungspunkte in einem ständigen kollektiven Austausch innerhalb der internationalen Netzwerke der Mail Art dienten. Die Archivinstitution selbst wurde so zu einer selbstreferentiellen künstlerischen Praxis, die performativ und konzeptionell ist, das Verhältnis zwischen künstlerischem Schaffen und der Schaffung von Wissen verändert und neue Wege des Denkens über, der Beschreibung und der Ausstellung von Kunst sowie der mit ihr verbundenen sozialen Prozesse fordert.
Das Seminar betrachtet das aktive Archiv sowohl aus einem spezifischen Blickwinkel, indem es sich auf drei zentrale Fallstudien konzentriert - Galantais Archiv Artpool Art Research (enter), Ulises Carrions Other Books and So Archive (OBASA) und Guy Schraenens Archive for Small Press & Communication (A.S.P.C.) -, als auch aus einer breiteren Perspektive, indem es die konzeptionelle Kraft des Begriffs des "aktiven Archivs" selbst untersucht: Tatsächlich bietet dieser Begriff ein fruchtbares Modell für das Verständnis eines breiten Spektrums performativer und intermedialer Kunstpraktiken, die sich seit den 1960er Jahren entwickelten und im Kontext des Kalten Krieges, insbesondere unter autoritären Regimen sowohl kommunistischer als auch kapitalistischer Ideologien, eine Dimension des politischen Widerstands und Aktivismus erhielten.
Dementsprechend eröffnet das Seminar, das aus einem gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekt von Artpool und OBASA hervorgegangen ist, natürlich auch für andere, ähnlich "aktive" Ansätze für Archive, kulturelle Praktiken und und kulturellen Praktiken und Institutionen, die in den internationalen Mail Art Netzwerken von den 1960er bis zu den 1980er Jahren.
